Chez Anne , St Meme les Carrieres, Charente www.chez-anne.net
2 Rue des Rentes, 16720 St Même les Carrières

Great rustic bed and breakfast with very warm welcome, run by English couple. Real authentic French atmosphere, with picturesque courtyard. Lock up area for bikes. Rooms reasonable - about 50 Euros for a double room. Right in the heart of the Cognac vineyards. If you ask nicely they will arrange a visit to a local Cognac distillery.

La Roseraie, Chenonceaux, The Loire www.charmingroseraie.com
7, rue du Docteur Bretonneau - 37150 Chenonceaux Tél : +33 (0) 2 47 23 90 09
Very charming hotel with restaurant worthy of a Michelin star and its own swimming pool. However, very good value. Rooms were 60Euros for a double and they have a family room, which takes 3 adults for 90Euros.
3 men on bikes stayed there to watch the Tour 2005 and the owner could not have been kinder.
Also Chenonceaux has possibly the most breath-taking chateau spanning the river, with a brilliant 'son et lumiere'
. So good, took the family there 2 years later.

Fantastic situation on the edge of a spectacular green lake. Friendly staff, place to lock up bikes. Good restaurant. Good routes to ride to Mont St Michel, which is definitely worth the visit. Bring locks, if you do though, as you can't take bikes on to the island.

Hotel les Pilotes, St Valery-sur-Somme www.lespilotes.com/
62, Rue de le Ferte 03 22 60 80 39
Typical French hotel, Very nice, slightly posh restaurant, with great view over the bay of the Somme.. If you eat there, try and get a table by the window. Restaurant has a quaint automated piano playing in the bar area, which adds character. Waiters very formal. However, menus from 25 Euros.
They have a great seafood selection on the menu and in October they do a menu gastronomique de mer, with about 20 courses !
Downstairs there is a menu degustation, with 47 varieties of moules ! Great atmosphere for lunch. St Valery is a relativley undiscovered jewel in Northern France with a steam railway, beach and old town where King Harold and Joan of Arc have been imprisoned. Have been back there many times.

La Terrasse, Cholet
Fairly basic, rural hotel, but with friendly staff and very good restaurant. Safe lock up area available for bkes.As its name suggests, it has a lovely terrace area for dining or the odd cafe au lait. Local village is very quiet, but Cholet is only a few miles away.

Auberge du Chateau de Nolette, Noyelles-sur-Mer, Nr St Valery-sur-Somme, Picardy
Old farmhouse/mansion. Recently converted to a B&B. No atmosphere and rather over-priced. No restaurant.
Would not recommend, unless other hotels in St Valery were booked up

Les Tourelles, Le Crotoy, Somme www.lestourelles.com
Chic, seaside hotel, a bit on the posh side, but not too expensive. Very nice restaurant. The most impressive exterior in Le Crotoy. Right on the beach and near the centre of town.

In a fairly unexciting rural, commercial, town near Arras. However, the oweners were very friendly and locked up the bikes. No restaurant - only breakfast. Not much else in the town.

Hotel Flots, Chataillon-plage, nr La Rochelle, Charente www.les-flots.fr/
52 Bd de la Mer 17340 Châtelaillon Plage - Tel : 05 46 56 23 42
Victorian seaside town, with touches of past garandeur. Hotel is right on the beach, with very good restaurant. A bit like 'Renne's Cafe' from 'Hello Hello'. They do a very good half board deal. You always have to book for the restaurant. All the sea food comes in fresh each day from the market in the town and is excellent. Lock up for bikes. Have been back there 3 times.

Fannie's Farm Shop.
Proper tea stop, with home made cakes etc. The infamous Barry Astral can be found lurking here every Thursday, pretending to work in the garden, but actually consuming more calaries in tea than he expends in the garden.
